Introduction to IOT

Introduction to IOT

Internet of Things (IoT) is basically a concept that connects all the devices to the internet and let them communicate with each other over the internet. IoT is a huge network of connected devices – all of which collect and share data about how they are used and the environments in which they are operated.

Introduction to IoT – Internet Of Things

Origin and Impact

Defining the Internet of things as "simply the point in time when more 'things or objects' were connected to the Internet than people", Cisco Systems estimated that the IoT was "born" between 2008 and 2009, the term Internet of Things is 16 years old. But the actual term “Internet of Things” was coined by Kevin Ashton in 1999 during his work at Procter & Gamble. Ashton who was working in supply chain optimization, wanted to attract senior management's attention to a new exciting technology called RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification).

There are significant positive impact of the IoT on citizens, businesses and governments, ranging from helping governments reduce healthcare costs and improving quality of life, to reducing carbon footprints, increasing access to education in remote underserved communities, and improving transportation safety apart form this is efficient and saves time. .

Building Blocks of IOT

Four basic things to form building block of IoT system these are:

  • ·       Sensors
  • ·       Processors
  • ·       Gateways
  • ·       Applications

Each of the given entity has its own characteristics in order to synthesize a useful and more practical IoT system.

IOT Design and Development Considerations

In order to survive in the industry of Internet of Things (IoT). It is very essential to connect different products to IoT, and providing extra features to consumers more preciously to explore the capabilities of IoT. It also allows the manufacturer to stay connected with their customer while discovering new product use cases and applications that open them up to new revenue streams. When designing your first IoT device, there are some most important things to keep in mind:

  • ·       Cost
  • ·       Features
  • ·       User interface
  • ·       Power
  • ·       Size
  • ·       Antenna
  • ·       Network
  • ·       Cloud
  • ·       Interoperability
  • ·       Security

 Security Considerations Using IOT

Some most important security concerns to have in mind before developing an IOT app:

  • ·         Privacy.
  • ·         Hardware issues.
  • ·         Encryption of data.
  • ·         Web interface.
  • ·         Less network awareness.
  • ·         Insecure software.
  • ·         Side channel attacks.
  • ·         Rogue IoT devices.
  •  Secure IoT Through Framework, Design and Deployment Considerations

Opportunities with IOT

IoT business opportunities

  • ·         Medical and fitness spheres. Fitness wearables are not new to us and it seems that they are connected to the Internet as they communicate with our smartphones.
  • ·         Industrial internet of things.
  • ·         Smart cities.
  • ·         Smart houses

IOT in Enterprise

Enterprise Internet of Things or simply Enterprise IoT is the next advancement in technology that enables physical 'things' with embedded computing devices (tiny computers) to participate in business processes for reducing manual work and increasing overall business efficiency. In simple word it will provide ability for IoT to solve business-related problems, improve performance and efficiency and can scale up the way enterprise does business.
